Carl Henry the 3rd Music

Carl Henry the 3rd

Internationally recognized singer, and Juno award nominee, Carl Henry the 3rd, was born above the cross-roads in Jamaica’s bubbling capital city, Kingston, at a time when ska was King.

The raucous soundtrack of Carl’s childhood ranged from the clatter of the big city, to the local rhythms of mento, ska and rocksteady; and the R&B, Motown, gospel and classical music that he heard at home.

Faith, service, education and etiquette were elemental in his early life. Knowing this, it’s no surprise that his first public vocals rang out at the Anglican church he attended, in Linstead, St. Catherine’s

Carl immigrated to Toronto with his parents and siblings, in the early 70’s, when Hog Town had an introverted; poker-face; Sunday-closure kind of vibe. His impressive vocals shone in his high-school music class, and he eventually became the lead singer for the rock band, Jhanuary, before beginning his solo career as a reggae artist.

The late 70s and early 80s witnessed the continued emergence of the nascent Toronto reggae scene, and despite a host of systemic barriers, Carl’s optimism and determination continued to move his career forward, in Canada, Europe, the US and Jamaica.

Carl’s talent, dedication and commitment to community, have garnered him recognition and awards including a 2010 Juno nomination for his album American Dream, in the Reggae Recording of the Year category.

Stylistically and linguistically versatile, the Lover’s Rock and R&B specialist has ignited the stage with his enigmatic presence, and sparkling vocals for over four decades. Carl has opened for or shared the stage with a Who’s Who of musical aristocracy and reggae legends including: Sting; Freddie McGregor; Jimmy Cliff; The Bee-Gees; Beenie Man; Beres Hammond; Tony Rebel; Ninja Man; Ritchie Stephens; Luciano; Shaggy; Papa San; The Stylistics; The Manhattans; Billy Paul; and The Delfonics.

Carl has toured internationally and recorded with production luminaries including: Sly and Robbie; Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd; King Jammy; Joe Gibbs; Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes; Bunny Gemini; Phillip ‘Fattis’ Burrell, and Narada Michael Walden.

Carl continues to donate his time and resources to a number of charitable causes including Autism Canada and The Canadian Cancer Society.
